Fisher Monahan

Artist member since 2025
Thunder Bay, Ontario

Fisher Monahan is an illustrator, writer, and independent publisher best known for his visually driven storytelling and unique approach to memoir. Through his Sweetgrass Chronicles series, he blends hand-drawn sketches, handwritten observations, and personal essays into a genre-defying format (equal parts travel diary, art book, and creative manifesto).

Based loosely in Canada but often found anywhere but home, Fisher documents his travels with a backpack, a sketchbook, and a sharp eye for the absurd. His work explores the blurry lines between place, person, and perception—offering readers a candid, offbeat, and beautifully rendered view of the world.

What kind of artwork do you have in your home?

Formerly functional pieces of industrial hardware I’ve collected throughout my travels. I see souvenir collections from past trips as art exhibits in themselves.

When did you start making art, and why?

Late high school, I started keeping a journal where I would draw accompanying illustrations. Eventually I started to express myself more through drawing than words, so my journals became sketchbooks and that’s that!

Which piece of art you've created is your favourite, and why?

Internet Camo Variant 001. The first piece I ever made in this series changed my perspective on how art can reflect life.

Why is it important for people to have art in their home or life?

Our environment shapes the way we view the world and subsequently— how we live in it. Surrounding ourselves with things that inspire or evoke a feeling can be used as tools to shape our lives the way we want to.
